Good evening everyone,
I have a Rode Ridder reading book (first edition, reasonable condition) that was signed by the author in 1977 or 1978. My question is, when a book is signed with the name and surname of the buyer, does this detract from the value of the book? book?
I would think so; but that doesn't seem to be in line with the - sometimes absurdly - high prices that I see on secondhand.
Thanks for your explanation.
LouC

Most signings have a mention of the name of the buyer/recipient, so that in itself does not detract from the value of the book. If the name is not mentioned, it seems less authentic.

The most beautiful (the most valuable) is of course a signing with a nice dedication to a buyer/recipient, who is known or famous.

Like a secret message from the Red Knight himself, in mirror writing ;-)

Thank you very much for your prompt response, vertigo!
Best regards,
Lou

An additional note: nowadays there are regular signings, so the signings are also less rare and less valuable. There seem to be more signed than unsigned copies of some books in circulation.
In the 1970s, signings were even less common and signings were therefore rarer.

But how 'authentic' is such a 'copy' in the event of a 'transfer/sale'?...

Just as authentic as before.

Of course there will be people who prefer a 'bare' signing to a signing with the name of the recipient. With a bare signing you can be sure that it comes from a soulless signing session (unless it is a special, numbered and signed edition).

But again, 'bare' signatures rarely occur, if at all, in older books. The name of the recipient is also important in determining the history of the specimen. Is it a purchased or donated copy? Is the recipient a famous person? Etc.

And what is it actually about?
The signature? The message? The name of the buyer? Or all?
The signature of a 'bare' signing at a soulless signing session is just as authentic as one with 'message' in the name at a 'signing session with soul'...
With exactly identical copies, that is.
The difference is only the name.
Kind regards xyz (signature) or Kind regards (signature)
And both most likely have more 'value' than a 'just blank' copy...
But to each their own for sure...
