On the side of some Zwarte Beertjes there are 1, 2 or 3 stars above the logo.
What does it mean?

The introduction of the asterisks at the end of 1963 caused a lot of headaches. Bears were equipped with 0 to 3 stars above the bear. The main stories were not so much with the publisher, but with the collectors. What do these asterisks mean? A popular opinion was that it indicated the genre. But there were so many exceptions to this that it didn't seem logical. Another option was that it was a quality brand. But what did no stars mean? Bad quality? Not logical either. In the end it was Rinus Daane who solved the puzzle: it turned out to be a price code. 0 or 1 star meant normal price, 2 stars meant double the price and 3 stars three times the normal price. The system of the asterisks was briefly changed in 1971 to a system of one or more bears, but that turned out to be short-lived. By 1972 both the extra bears and the stars had disappeared.
