Who can tell me more about this view of Bremen? It is a painting (45 by 36 cm) that I inherited.

It is not a drawing or painting, but an engraving, which does not appear to be in good condition. I don't see a signature, so it will probably be difficult to find a maker.

In itself it is a nice image, but as said, the condition is not so good. The image looks a bit brown and blotchy. There is also no fancy frame around it.

An engraving usually has sharper lines. Given the gray tones, I would suspect that it could be a stone print. But it's actually impossible to judge from such a small photo.

Huub,

It's quite a beautifully detailed work, lithography seems right to me. I see a stamp at the bottom right? How do you get to "Bremen view"? The frame is definitely German, I have another painting with a similar structure.

Thank you for your comments. The lithography was always in the living room of my parental home. Certainly from 1955. Maybe earlier. It is certainly Bremen because I have requested information from the City archive of the city of Bremen:

the picture you send in your E-Mail from March 1st shows the view from the so called “Wasserkunst” (Waterworks) on Stadtwerder to the old town of Bremen from about 1930/35. The artist is not known to us.

the picture you send us shows the bridge „Große Weserbrücke“ (renamed 1933 “Adolf-Hitler-Brücke, 1939“ Lüderitz-Brücke ”). In 1958-1960 a new bridge next to the old one had been built as “Wilhelm-Kaisen-Brücke”, which is still existing; the old bridge had been demolished in 1961. The view is from the “Wasserkunst”, built in 1871/1873 and 43 meters high; the roof of this building had been and still is a popular position for photos and other pictures of the old town of Bremen.

The lithography is still in its original condition, as I have always seen the view of Bremen (for 65 years), the frame has probably been around it for 90 or 95 years. The big question for me is how this work came to us! Perhaps there is an antique dealer or art connoisseur who can tell you more about this type of "washer art" from Bremen.

Just add it to the item in the catalogue: 8166095

It's in the wrong section, but it's not the only one.

It's not "water art". Wasserkunst is the name of the building, Bremen's old water tower .

I have added two extra pictures: the mark at the bottom right and a picture taken by hr. Stickelmann of the same view of Bremen around 1925.
