Hello fellow collectors.

I am filling the catalog with pins from my collection that are not yet in it. You have to start somewhere right?
I hope I'm doing it right!

I wonder who/how/when a new item in the catalog can be given a value. What's up with that?

Hi, see that you have put several pins on it, firstly they are not pins but pins and try to put the photo on a white background, the best is to make it with your phone and then crop it then you will avoid that they are on its side and also add the size of the pin and any information about the nature of the pin, this can often be found on the internet.

Any user can enter a catalog value, via "Edit item", or directly when entering the object.

That is different from, for example, in the stamp section. As a user, once there is one catalog value in it, you can no longer add or change anything.
Only if no value has been entered yet (also when adding a new one) can you enter/add catalog values as a user.

So with 'Pins' every user can always modify an existing value?
Handy, then you don't need a price suggestion system at Speldjes ...

This question is in the Pins section, so my answer applies only to that. But it is indeed only valid if no price has been entered yet (which is the case with the majority of the items).

If a list price is already mentioned, it can only be changed in the pins section by an administrator. The "Suggest catalog value" function is also available here for this purpose.
In the 12 years that I have been an administrator, no one has ever used it, as far as I know.

Other than that, I don't care. I only disapprove of prices that are really stupid.

Let's assume for a moment that the same procedure is used in all sections, but that with Pins almost everything is blank or is never adjusted again (so can be changed) and that with Stamps people are constantly changing (so Price suggestions).

In the 12 years that I have been an administrator, no one has ever used it, as far as I know.

That's because you are not a Price Reviewer, if you want to you can report this to me.
There are currently 318 unreviewed price suggestions at Pins, Pins and Buttons.

I see it now. Apparently I never realized that as a Super Admin I didn't automatically have that function as well. (I just mean… who is?)

There is also a 'vacancy' for something similar in another section, if you want to make up for the 'damage' lol

That is set up because some (super) managers did not like to deal with prices, Arco among others did not like this.
In the future this will change, then price suggestions will be treated as regular changes and will be on the review list of all administrators.

Coming back to the Vintagefreak input, I've just cleaned up the background of your images. That's a lot of work (in Photoshop), so the cleaner your original photos or scans are, the better.

Personally, I prefer square crops, because the images are scaled to a fixed height or width, and square always remains square. That's not to say I disapprove of other proportions, as long as the image is clear (and the background as neutral as possible) I'm fine with it.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to do something with that! The pictures are a bit crappy. Despite the white background.
Stick pin is what else but?. Interesting detail: the white folder is from "exota" and the folders say "my pin collection"! They've been in the wrong folder for 50 years!

It's just not clear to me how the value is created. It's like "what the madman asks" instead of "what the madman gives". When I was in the antiques trade, the more crazy people (ask) the higher the price!
People almost automatically made the mistake of thinking that rare is always expensive! I've seen many auction sales where people dropped off bewildered and they just wouldn't accept that the desirability of the product determines the price! Of course you can ask for more, but does it sell?

Stick pin is what else?
A jousting pin has a long straight pin on the back, usually without security.
A pin has a short "nail" on the back with a butterfly clasp or a plastic cap to hold it. Pins have been more or less the standard since around 1990.

the white folder is from "exota" and the folders say "my pin collection"!
That shouldn't be there: #2831809

It's like "what the madman asks" instead of "what the madman gives".
It's best to ignore the catalog value and look at the "Revenue LastDodo shops".
If the person entering a list price is also (the first) to put the item up for sale, the asking price (and list price) may be a matter of wishful thinking, but collectors are not so easily fooled. In the end, everything is corrected by the market.
