Just came back from vacation and saw that the number of WW2 series has been considerably thinned, which I am not happy with at all. I have just indicated to René that I want to sort the war books in this way and have received the administrative rights from him. Now I have wasted a lot of time and energy, which I am really fed up with.

Series has the following instruction: if no name has been given by the publisher, but a common or logical name exists, etc.

Why is the Battle of the Bulge not a common name and should it be put in a receptacle called Western Europe? The instruction does not rule out my solution and also on the forum I do not find any agreements about the abstraction level for series.

Western Europe is so meaningless that WW2 also complies. Not only logic escapes me, but I can do absolutely nothing with it.

I have a nice collection of war books on the shelf but I am forced to turn to a medium other than CW when this is the level of abstraction to work on.

I had to search, but you mean "WW2 Western Europe"

Agree that this is an unfortunate stricture.
The Ardennes Offensive was not exactly a footnote in World War II.
See already 11 books on this subject, and it seems to me that many more books have been published on this.
This doesn't make me happy either.

Of course it would be better if these kinds of books were grouped in a different way than with the series field, but the discussion about that is also deadlocked.

What I now see is that under "types" there are many things that could actually be better placed in a theme field.
Now what it is, and what the subject of the book is, are mixed up.

You can see a children's book, almanac, atlas and the like as a kind of book.
But topics like animation, anatomy, antiques are actually themes.
You could also place the Ardennes offensive in a theme field.
Seems so useful in view of the future theme sections.

Battle of the Bulge could be a series of mine, but only as long as it is not yet possible to specify this as a theme.

But a series like WW2 main characters has, I think, rightly changed. To begin with, Main Characters is a slogan that, unlike the Battle of the Bulge, never spontaneously visits anyone. And that is certainly very important when you 'come up with' a logical series name. In my view, the level of abstraction is also too high here. For example, at 1359119 is I don't think the series \ hero is WW2 main characters but just Charles de Gaulle . But that is just not listed.

I also wonder why those themes were only introduced in a few sections (Stamps, Postcards, ...). In the video games, for example, 'Game series' is also used to find games about 'golf', 'Asterix', 'pinball', 'Ahatha Christie' etc because that is now the only option.

If you were to add 'Theme' for each section now, it would become a lot easier and clearer (also to create the future central Theme Register).

A question that I ask myself: will 'Heroes' and 'Themes' come together (in the central Theme section)? And by heroes I mean non-existent persons, existing ones will be included in the central 'Persons Register' if I understand correctly.

Sounds logical, but I don't think it's useful in the end. The central persons register is there if it is up to me for both real and virtual persons.

If only to avoid certain problems with the introduction of various religious works. ;-)

This is exactly the "throw it a lot" mentality that annoys me with the magazines green and yellow.

Hey Arwin, I have a lot of bad qualities (my wife has a list somewhere) but Throw-In-A-Hope-Mentality is not one of them.

Ceterum censeo ... that it's just a really bad idea to make Asterix a theme and Caesar a person.

Because the point here is that there is only one Asterix and only one Julius Caesar. The purpose of a central register is to ensure that one Asterix exists throughout Catawiki, which can be the 'main subject' of a book, film, doll or poster. Just as it is intended that there is only one Julius Caesar within Catawiki, who can be the subject of a film as well as the writer of a book. It does not matter that one has ever really walked around and the other has not. At least not for their 'functioning' within a database. If there is a central register of names, Asterix, Herakles and Captain Nemo will hear it just as loudly as Julius Caesar, Brigitte Bardot and Gerrit Komrij.

And that is completely separate from the use of themes, which is a completely different discussion.

Fine if you think otherwise. but then just like arguments black on white (because I can't handle green and yellow) why and \ or not. Then we can talk about that.

Sorry Pegag,

A few weeks ago I got really angry about the layout of the magazines, which in my opinion is really not good, and now I was triggered by your comment to a fierce response.

Of course you can just give an opinion, and in a perfect world I should always only respond substantively.
But yes, during a discussion I had about those magazines (via email) my patience was tested quite a bit, hence my irritated comment.
Obviously you relate that to yourself, but see it more as a belch from a general, rather big irritation of mine.

In terms of content then.

A fictional person (invention) is not the same as an actual person.
If you don't put fictional and real people in the same list, you can later create links between those two lists.

For example
Doctor Who has been played by 11 actors.
Then you should be able to link to all those actors from the theme “the fictional person Doctor Who”.
And from those actors you have to be able to link to all the roles they have played.
That will only work if they are not in the same list.

About Caesar.

The Asterix Caesar is a derivative of the real Caesar.
It is based on it, but it most certainly is not.

So what you should do is put the real Caesar (for example if it is depicted on a coin) next to the people.
Then you can link from there to the Caesar in the list of fictional persons. (also from movies, etc.)

What should come as well are central lists of countries, writers, draughtsmen, etc.
Then you can distinguish between what is about a person and what is made by someone.
From the Caesar in the persons list, you could link to the Caesar in the writers list.
The fictional Caesars obviously had no hand in the books written by him.
You have to keep that separate.

But also, for example, Martin Lodewijk as a writer in a central writer list, and Martin Lodewijk as a draftsman in a central draftsman list.
And then a link between the two Martin Lodewijken.

You don't have to make so many links every time you enter a new item, they can then run through the lists.
Had it not been such a problem transferring the magazines from the comics to the new section?
If you are alone with the series, heroes can also be placed in a central list.

If we all want to make a catalog, you also have to make sure that it can be cataloged.
And that is not possible if you keep throwing things together that are actually different.
And in my opinion the latter happens far too often here (see also my comment about species in books)
Sometimes you can hardly do anything else, because the alternative is unworkable. (I do sometimes)
But this is simply not necessary.
It is the easiest solution, but not the right one.

Just a word about those gods then.
We want to introduce the themes in a more structured way in the future.

Everyone is now doing something, which makes themes in many sections a total chaos.
What you can expect is that you will be guided more when you enter a theme.
Then, for example, you choose people as the main theme.
Then you will (for example) be given a choice between normal person, fictional person and divine person.
And only after that you can enter your person.

Doctor Who is an interesting problem, which I had indeed not thought of yet. I do have the idea that there may be a difference in person and theme somewhere, but I am going to let that take effect on me for a while.

I already foresee thorny dilemmas if you have to distinguish between Julius Caesar because one figure is in a novel and the other in a biography. Do you attach a biography to the 'real' Caesar or to the fictional one. Because in that biography can the Julius Caesar be equated with the Julius Caesar from De Koperen Ketel or with the Julius Caesar from De Bello Gallico?

I may be misinterpreting you, but that of those Martin Lodewijken, as you describe it, seems to me exactly what we actually want to get rid of. The fact that we now have six Joost Swartes, one makes comics, the other designs stamps, the third illustrates books and so on. With the risk and misery that Joost's aliases and variants in one list differ slightly from those in the other list. Surely there should be a single list containing a single Martinus Spyridon Johannes Lodewijk so that everyone who knocks in Martin Lodewijk somewhere in a random column will hang an item with that one Martinus Spyridon Johannes Lodewijk in a field?

And I made my comment about those religious works above a little jokingly, but I do think that you should seriously take into account that the status of a Jaweh, Allah or Nanabozho as a normal, fictional or divine person is very strong. divergent views prevail depending on which club you speak to.

Yes, you are indeed wrong, it is exactly the other way round.
The draftsman and writer Martin Lodewijk are already in two different files with the comics.
It is only when you search for author that it appears that they are one, because they are presented to us like that.
By the way, even if you are going to work with separate lists for artists and writers, you can also keep a list of authors (all together) for (for example) the comics.

The draftsman Swarte now appears perhaps 6 times, but with a central draftsman list only once.
And if you select that, you immediately see what he has made in magazines, stamps, books and comics.
There you could also click on a link to his work as an architect, or on a link to see all of him together.
Then you have a choice on what and how you want to search, and you are not limited by the "throw everything on a lot of mentality"

The current system that you, as a collector, must always link all items to areas, is then superfluous.
You only have to make the link between the draftsman and the architect Joost Swarte once and you're done.
Of course you have to pay attention to aliases, but you only have to do that once, and not 100 times for each section again, by 100 different administrators.

Naturally, this benefits the unity of Catawiki, it is a much cleaner system.

And I made my comment about those religious works above a little jokingly, but I do think that you should seriously take into account that the status of a Jaweh, Allah or Nanabozho as a normal, fictional or divine person is very strong. divergent views prevail depending on which club you speak to.

I find the opinion of certain pushy atheists just a little less important than not offending large groups of believers.
A normal atheist will think it is best to dismiss someone like Zeus as a divine person, even though everyone now agrees that he does not really exist.
An atheist who is going to make problems about this in order to score his point, will knock on a regular door as far as I am concerned.

I already foresee tricky dilemmas

I hear too.
But every section already has tricky dilemmas.
If we take a look at that, we can cancel all the sections, and put everything in the section “things”.

The above discussion shows once again that we still lack a good structure and that we are working on it, but that we are far from finished.

When we agree for Series that battles and operations can be added, and for example WW2 I also prefer to mention the country where the battle took place, then I am a bit happier again.

No problem if a different solution in themes is sought in the long term, but for "the time being" we can move on.

Pegag, I can agree with your comment about main characters, as an administrator I also wanted to adjust them in leading characters because that fits better in my experience. Depending on the way in which it is searched, it will pop up or not. By stating the names of the leaders under "Name variations" you can make it easy to find. On the other hand, enough books have been written about Hitler and De Gaulle to give them their own series.

I still ask whether the corrections can still be corrected. I saw that Arco has made the necessary adjustments as an administrator, but I don't know if he, as a "Super administrator", has enough superpowers to roll it back.

Unfortunately for you, I am not here to make people happy, but to keep the database as consistent as possible with the current resources and agreements, without regard to the person and as good as emotionless.

My 2 cents:

1. WW2 is not a series / hero but a theme. A series / hero is Eagle Eye, Bob Evers, etc ... That's how it is intended.

2. All those derivatives are also (sub) themes

3. You will have to wait just like everyone else until there is a theme field for books and not use other fields in an artificial way to get your own overview as you would like it to be. That is what another 23000 users and if we start with that, the end is lost.

4. Somewhere on the forum there is another discussion about series / hero at Boeken and there is a reason for that discussion. Wouldn't it be strange if these kinds of agreements could be made through the back door without other administrators being aware of it and having been able to give their opinion? Then you get this kind of hassle where you are not happy now, and neither am I because merging also takes time. And this forum stuff too.

By the way, I have not removed the main theme WW2 anywhere, you know. Am currently just trying to merge all those sub-themes. I had in mind that hopefully there will be a theme field soon, so that the only remaining series / hero WW2 can then at least be transferred to that theme field and is the starting point for any sub-themes.

Goodbye Arco,

1. In the input field for series it is indicated: "if no name has been given by the publisher, but there is a common or logical name, etc." gives in my opinion the space I have taken. Because why is, as is the Ardennes Offensive, not a series and Western Europe is? Why do you choose this level of abstraction? The main theme WW2 and the sub-theme WW2 Western Europe that you have also left standing are of such a high level of abstraction that it is meaningless. Fiction and non-fiction are intertwined as well as operations, battles, etc.

2. Yep, but CW doesn't offer room for that yet

3. Then I propose that the text at the input field is adjusted. And is only open to 1 interpretation. Because yes, "common and logical name" can be interpreted in various ways. And as you can see with WW2 series, many others use the same interpretation as I do.

4. Which back door? I used the front door! And this is based on the sentence I have already quoted about the input field Series.

I have searched for a discussion about series, but could not find it and forgive me if I look no further than the title Arco, because that is usually not possible.

And are there supporters or opponents? I have already asked for the video games.

It must probably be very complicated to add those fields, just like our government formation.

Strength desired from Belgium ;-)

PS: all kidding aside. It will indeed not be that simple to disassemble all that for the 'big' sections, but the longer one waits, the more work.

I have already requested it for the video games and will get to work there, maybe leave the 'big' sections for later.

It should probably be very complicated to add those fields, just like our government formation.

What is difficult about it is that the more sections now have a theme field, the more difficult it will be to make a whole of them for the central theme register.
Themes that are called slightly different in one section than in the other sections, but have about the same content, although not for a few items.
Quite a few themes have been filled in that are not actually a theme, that info will disappear.
We want to come up with a semi-closed list, to end the proliferation of themes.
And we also want to structure that in about ten main themes, with sub-themes underneath, and these sub-themes often also have sub-themes attached to them.
So a kind of tree structure.

Whoever is going to do this shouldn't expect much gratitude from the community.
It will receive a whole mountain of criticism for disappearing and disputably merged themes.
Just look at Belinda's reaction to Arco's adjustment, and that times 1000.

In that respect, I understand the reluctance to give even more sections a theme field at the moment.
If that central theme registry had been introduced 2 years ago, it would not have been so complicated now.
The longer one waits, the more complicated it gets, so that one just slips it back up, making it even more complicated, and so on.
Believe me, in Belgium it will all be OK ;-)
But yes, this just has to be done.
We can no longer continue like this.

As far as I am concerned, the central lists (theme and other lists) are given top priority, and everything else is subordinated to them.
Just ignore the suggestions and wishes of the users for a while, the structure must first be correct.
