A partir de 1847 cinq entreprises privées d’impression et de gravure ont créé et produit tous les timbres fédéraux durant une période de plusieurs dizaines d’années. Elles ont expérimenté dans tous les aspects du procès de production de timbres. Leurs investigations ont produit la perforation machinale et les techniques de gommages.

From 1847 on, five private printing and engraving firms designed and produced all federal postage stamps and experimented with every aspect of the stamp-making process. Their investigations produced machine perforation and gumming processes.

F - George Washington (1732-1799) : homme d’état, chef d’état-major de l’Armée continentale et premier président des Etats-Unis. Comme Benjamin Franklin, lui aussi est un des « Founding Fathers » (Pères fondateurs). Présidence du 30 avril 1732 au 4 mars 1797.
E – George Washington (1732-1799) : statesman, commander of the Continental Army and first president of the United States. Like Benjamin Franklin, he also is one of the “Founding Fathers”. Presidency from 30th of April to 4th of March 1797.

Des imitations officielles furent produites à partir de 50 objets faites par le Bureau of Engraving and Printing sur l’ordre du Département des Postes. Ces timbres ne pouvaient servir à l’usage postal.
Trivia :
Official imitations made from new plates of 50 subjects, were made by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing by order of the Post Office Department. These were not valid for postal use.

F - Lors du centenaire des timbres de 5c et 10c décrits plus haut, un feuillet commémoratif fut émis le 19 mai 1947 à l’occasion de l’exposition philatélique internationale à New York sur lequel est reproduit les timbres émis le 1er juillet 1847, représentant respectivement les pères fondateurs Benjamin Franklin et George Washington (voir LD 1116623).
E - During the centenary of the stamps of 5c and 10c described above, a commemorative sheet was issued on May 19, 1947 on the occasion of the international philatelic exhibition in New York on which is reproduced the stamps issued on July 1, 1847, representing Founding Fathers Benjamin Franklin and George Washington respectively (see LD 1116623).

F - Le Département de la poste donna l’ordre au « Bureau of Engraving and Printing » (Bureau de gravure et d’impression) de produire de nouvelles plaques desdits timbres mais qui n’airaient pas de valeur postale. Les imitations officielles qui montrent plusieurs différences aves les timbres originaux, furent émises en 1875 sur papier bleuâtre sans gomme et étaient non dentelées.
E - The Post Office ordered the «Bureau of Engraving and Printing» to produce new plates of the said stamps but which did not have postal value. The official imitations which show several differences with the original stamps, were issued in 1875 on bluish paper without gum and were imperforate.
