F – La série est la première série commémorative émise afin de faire connaître l’exposition panaméricaine tenue à Buffalo (New York) du 1er mai au 1er novembre 1901. Les timbres qui montrent les moyens de transport modernes sont imprimés pour la première fois en deux couleurs et portent l’inscription “Commemorative Series 1901”. Les valeurs de 1c., 2c. et de 4c. ont également été imprimées par erreur avec un centre renversé. Anecdote: Le 5 septembre 1901, le président William McKinley fit un discours à l’exposition, fut victime d’un attentat le lendemain et mourut le 14 septembre suivant.
E – The series is the first commemorative series issued to publicize the Pan-American Exposition held in Buffalo (New York) from the 1st of May to the 1st of November 1901. The stamps depicting modes of modern transportation were the first bi-colored postage stamps and bear the inscription “Commemorative Series 1901.” The 1c., 2c. and 4c. values were also printed invert by accident. Anecdote: President William McKinley held a speech at the Exposition the 5th of September 1901, was victim of an attack the day after and died the following.

F - Navigation intérieure rapide
Le dessin du timbre est basé sur une photographie du navire “City of Alpena”, prise lors de son trajet entre Detroit et Mackinac Island. Le navire était un vapeur à aubes, d’une longueur de 87 m, et fut en service de 1893 à 1921, desservant tous les ports du lac Erie. Il pouvait transporter 400 passagers ensemble avec des cargaisons de marchandises et de victuailles pour les communautés locales.
E – Fast Lake Navigation
The stamp’s design is based on a photograph of the SS City of Alpena, taken during its travel between Detroit and Mackinac Island. The ship was a paddlewheel steamboat, was 87 m. long, and was in service from 1893 to 1921, serving ports all over Lake Erie. The ship could carry 400 passengers along with cargoes of package freight, merchandise and foodstuffs for local communities.

F – Empire State Express
Le train “Empire State Express” était un des premiers trains pour passagers conçu pour la longue distance et la grande vitesse. Le train fut employé à partir de 1891 pour le trajet entre Buffalo (New-York) et la ville de New York. C’était un voyage de 742 km parcouru en 7 heures, ce qui était impressionnant dans ce temps-là. Le train avait le record de vitesse national de 181 km à l’heure durant plus de 10 ans.
E – Empire State Express
The Empire State Express train was one of the earliest long distance passenger trains that ran at high speeds. Starting in 1891 it ran between Buffalo (New York) and New York City. It was a journey of 742 km made in seven hours, which at the time was impressive. It maintained the land speed record of 181 kmph for more than ten years.

F - Automobile électrique à Washington
Le gravure du timbre est basé sur le dessin d’une affiche de la compagnie “Baltimore & Ohio Railroad“ à Washington D.C. La voiture électrique était fabriquée en France par la Société des Voitures Électriques Système Kriéger) et en 1901 seulement 65 véhicules avaient été produits. La voiture pouvait parcourir 105 km et pouvait atteindre une vitesse de 33 km à l’heure. Cependant l’idée de voitures électriques n’a pas pris et la compagnie fut liquidée en 1909.
E – Electric Automobile in Washington
The engraving of this stamp is based on the engraving of an advert of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad in Washington, D.C. The electric vehicle was of French manufacture by the “Société des Voitures Électriques Système Kriéger” and in 1901 only 65 vehicles had been produced. The car had a range of 105 km and could travel up to 33 kmph. Nevertheless the idea of electric vehicles did not catch on and the company wound up in 1909.

F - Pont près des Chutes du Niagara
Le timbre représente le pont “Upper Steel Arch”, ou connu également sous le nom de “Honeymoon Bridge” ou encore “Falls View Bridge”. Il fut achevé en 1898 et était le plus long pont en acier à une travée du monde. Il traversait le Niagara des Etats-Unis au Canada. Pourtant en janvier 1938 le pont s’écroula à cause d’une tempête de glace qui éleva le niveau de la rivière broyant ses fondations. La vignette est basée sur une photographie; deux trams qui allaient se croiser furent ajoutés.
E – Bridge at Niagara Falls
The stamp depicts the Upper Steel Arch Bridge, also known as the Honeymoon Bridge or Falls View Bridge. The bridge was completed in 1898 and was the largest single-span steel bridge in the world. It crossed Niagara from the United States to Canada. Nevertheless in January 1938 a massive ice storm raised the river and stacked so much ice against the bottom bridge supports that the entire structure collapsed. The vignette is based on a photograph; two trams that were crossing, were added.

F – Écluses du canal à Sault Ste. Marie
La vignette est basée sur une photographie de l’écluse du canal Poe à Sault Ste. Marie, localisée sur la rivière Ste Marie entre le Lac Supérieur et le Lac Huron. L’écluse fut bâtie en 1896 par les ingénieurs de l’armée et était l’écluse la plus large et la plus longue du monde. Elle fut également la première à fonctionner à l’électricité.
E – Canal locks at Sault Ste. Marie
The vignette was based on a photograph of the Poe Canal Lock, Sault Ste. Marie, located on the St Mary's River between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. The lock was built in 1896 by the Army Corps of Engineers. It was the largest and longest in the world. It also was the first to use electricity.

F – Navigation océanique rapide
La vignette est basée sur une carte postale du navire “St. Paul“ de l’American Line. Le St. Paul a été un navire maudit. Après un lancement raté en 1895, il heurta une épave submergée en 1900, et 8 ans plus tard éperonna accidentellement un navire britannique. Il fut modernisé en 1918, mais termina son parcours en 1920.
E – Fast ocean navigation
The vignette was based on a postcard of the St. Paul from the American Line. The St Paul was a cursed ship. After a botched launch in 1895, it hit a submerged wreck in 1900, and 8 years later it accidentally rammed a British naval ship. It was retrofitted in 1918, but ended its life in 1920.
