F - Pitcairn est une île de l'océan Pacifique, d’origine volcanique, faisant partie des îles Pitcairn. L’île n'est accessible que par bateau depuis l'archipel des Gambier, qui possède la piste d'atterrissage la plus proche, situé à environ 540 km à l'ouest-nord-ouest. La redécouverte de l’ile ne se fait qu’en 1808 quand un capitaine américain d’un baleinier rencontre les mutins du Bounty qui s’y étaient installés. En 1838 l’île fut mise sous protection britannique, fut ensuite une colonie de la Couronne britannique et enfin un territoire britannique d'outre-mer. Le service postal était très irrégulier avant 1921, puisqu’il dépendait de navires qui y passaient. Ensuite un service régulier fut installé et comme il n’y avait pas de timbres, les lettres bénéficièrent d’un affranchissement gratuit au moyen d’un cachet prouvant son origine. Le gouvernement néo-zélandais retira la concession d’affranchissement gratuit en 1926, mais ouvrit un bureau de poste à Pitcairn et mit des timbres néo-zélandais à la disposition des habitants moyennant l’apposition d’un cachet de l’île. Enfin, à partir du 15 octobre 1940, commencèrent l’émission de timbres-poste de l’île Pitcairn.
E - Pitcairn is an island in the Pacific Ocean, of volcanic origin, part of the Pitcairn Islands. The island is only accessible by boat from the Gambier Archipelago, which has the nearest airstrip, located about 540 km west-northwest. The island was rediscovered only in 1808 when an American captain of a whaler met the mutineers of the Bounty who had settled there. In 1838 the island was placed under British protection, was then a colony of the British Crown and finally a British overseas territory. The postal service was very irregular before 1921, as it depended on ships passing through. Then a regular service was installed and as there were no stamps, the letters had free postage by means of a stamp proving its origin. The New Zealand government withdrew the free postage concession in 1926, but opened a post office in Pitcairn and made New Zealand stamps available to residents by affixing an island stamp. Finally, from October 15, 1940, began the issue of postage stamps from Pitcairn Island.
