I have noticed that in many cases the Person field is filled in rather arbitrarily and that no uniform agreements are respected. I would like to continue in the coming weeks, but correcting the typos one by one is quite a lot of work. If there is an administrator who can do mass updates, please do the procedure via PB.

That is somewhat due to the nature of the changes. Mass updating is easier for an administrator to do only if the change affects multiple items at the same time.

Can you give an example of which changes you want to make?

Yep, that's exactly what I'm talking about. If the number of items is less than 10-15 I want to do it manually. The real mistakes must of course also be done manually. I mean a standard that we have to agree on and where the entire section has to be cleaned up. Example 1: "Disney character Donald Duck" instead of "Donald duck" or "Cartoon character Donald Duck". Example2: "Comic characters Suske en Wiske" instead of "Comic characters Suske en Wiske" or "Suske en Wiske". Example3: "Cartoonfiguur Suske" or "Comicfiguur Suske", no idea what the difference is between the two. Example 4: The comics start with "Comic Character ...", "Comic Characters ...", "Comics: ...", "Comic Series: ...", totally illogical in a field called "Person". And many more ...

I've already put a few together, but in a wiki it is sometimes mopping with the tap open, you know. It is best to report this kind of thing here ...

Is it the intention that cartoon characters or series are entered as a Person? I would limit it to existing, natural persons (so no fictional characters from TV and film).

It is much more effective if such an item is linked to the Series or Series in the Comic Category (which has often happened).

Arco, I understand it's difficult to keep order in a wiki, but either we take a big bucket and mop :-) or we just don't do anything. However, I don't know if this forum is the right place. If I ask you dozens (hundreds?) Of corrections in the coming weeks / months, these messages will be of no use to other collectors. Is there no other way?

Comic series do not belong here. However, I have no problem with cartoon characters as long as there are good agreements. Eg Theme "Comics: Tintin", Person "Cartoon Character Professor Zonnebloem" (according to instructions, who is depicted) and a link to Comics. If everything starts with "Cartoon Character ...." you can easily search. Ditto for Disney, Film, TV, ...

I am not authorized in that section, but a super administrator can quite easily merge all unwanted persons "cartoon character" *, so that the field can be cleared if a programmer is available again.

The problem is, first of all, that you can't blame people for adding characters like this on their own, because it's nowhere clearly stated that it's not allowed. The notes to the Person field must state exactly what is intended and what is not. (For example, the People theme at Stamps is much clearer.)

* By way of illustration: I have merged a number of incorrect series names in the pins section under _ . It's a stopgap solution, but it prevents more people from making the same mistake.

May I plead again not to empty this field (see previous message). According to the definition "what is depicted". It would be a shame to lose this info. In the past few days I looked around a bit and I can already tell you that Theme is not always filled in and that the link with Comics is not there. What I have already done 1) what is not a person must be blank "bear", "angel" 2) what is not depicted (the comic artist) must be in Designer 3) Person as "name, first name" 4) cartoon characters not as "Fanny "but" Cartoon Character Fanny ", so everything is alphabetically together with the S easy to search. Can you tell me if I can continue?

From the very beginning it was the intention to set up a central personal register for all sections. That really only concerned natural persons (living and dead people), no pseudonyms, aliases, characters or other fabrications.

The fill-in instruction refers to "the person depicted on or depicted by the item". If you do not define this strictly you will get excrescences as at 4927343 . In my opinion, that just makes this data less useful.

The fact that some fields are not filled in is not a good argument for filling other entries with junk.

Which does not mean that I feel the need to clean up debris ;-)
I have enough work on my own column.

P.S. Jummeke, the changes you want to make may one day be undone (in the very long term), but for now the People List will be a bit more organized. If you want to put in the time, I don't think there are many objections.

OK thanks. I understand the intention, but how should you proceed with cartoon characters (the same reasoning applies to your example)? Vb Theme De Kiekeboes, Persoon blanco, Designer Merho, link Strips De Kiekeboes. How do I find where Fanny is depicted (now you can)? For the time being I will clean some other stuff, but I will leave the cartoon characters waiting for further instructions.

I looked up a number of cartoon characters at 'Person', but after 10 minutes I already have a cross-eyed headache. It is almost impossible to get started.

You can sometimes choose from without addition or with addition: Comics, Comic Character, Comic Characters.

For example, for Tintin you can find

Tintin
Tintin and Snowy
Tintin Cartoon Characters
Tintin, haddock, sunflower
Cartoon characters Tintin and Snowy
Cartoon character Tintin

Tom Poes delivers the following

Bommel and Tom Poes
Cartoon characters Bommel and Tom Poes
Cartoon character Bommel and Tom Poes
Cartoon character Bommel and Tom Poes diverse
Cartoon character house of Tom Poes
Cartoon character Tom Poes

And so I can go on for a while.

Merge is impossible, because sometimes it is about the comic series, the other time about the character and sometimes there is an item that is not even a person (Cartoon character house of Tom Poes). Each item will therefore have to be assessed separately.

Some structure in the section is certainly desirable, but in accordance with agreements made / to be made. The main thing is that the theme field is filled in correctly, because often the fields Theme and Person are confused.

If you choose to fill in a name at 'Person', adding 'cartoon character' to each character does not make it clearer in my opinion. At a certain point that becomes an endless list and has no added value in ranking. Main characters that speak for themselves but the minor characters often say nothing.
I prefer 'Janssen [Tintin]' instead of 'Cartoon Character Janssen'.

Also consider the usual format of the name for natural persons within Catawiki: "Last name, First name" or "Last name, Initials".

Mentioning every fictional character that is depicted goes way too far within the scope of this catalog, I think.

Explain to me why you would like to see a selection of all items with Fanny on it. Why is mentioning the Kiekeboe series at Theme (or even better: a link with that series in the Comic Book) not enough?

Thanks for all the responses. I don't promise anything in the short term, but I do want to give it a try if we reach an appointment. @stripspeldjes: maybe I don't know all the possibilities, but when I am looking for something specific, the list is always very long (search on Theme De Kiekeboes if I know that I am looking for Fanny?) @collectioneur: previous message 3) I do @Ted: Merge can not, clean up first, and I want to help. Merge after that, see my first post for an administrator looking to do mass updates. As far as the spelling is concerned, I remain in favor of "Cartoonfiguur ...", all together at the S (and not J = Janssen) and collectors with less experience know immediately that these are comics. I like your idea for side characters "Cartoon Character Janssen [Tintin]"?

"Cartoon character Janssen [Tintin]"?

In that case I would choose "Comic Character [Tintin] Janssen" This way you immediately group the figures from the comic strip in question

I'll fix some other issues first and leave everyone a few more days to comment here on the forum. I notice that we are going to get there. How should it proceed to keep them together? "Cartoon character [Tintin] Tintin" or "Cartoon character Tintin" and "Cartoon character Tintin (Janssen)" or ...

I still don't understand why you would want to limit your selection to one figure from a series, to the exclusion of all others. So you don't collect Peek-a-boo items, unless Fanny is depicted? Okay, everyone's preference.

Apart from my basic position, I would advise you - from a practical point of view - to delete fictional characters that only have 1 or 2 items linked to. Nobody is waiting for a laundry list of names that contain almost nothing. As far as I am concerned, such a reference is only useful if a substantial number of items are linked to it. (This also applies to specialized sub-themes.)

The problem is that the relationships are not always 1 on 1. My opinion: The more search points the better, so both a beginner and an expert can work quickly. Take 3863447 , Asterix series, theme Comics: Asterix, as everything is perfect link to Comics / Asterix so you can search via related as well (but I already noticed that the links are usually not there). But Asterix is not depicted: either the title must contain a complete description of what is depicted, or Person must contain what is depicted. Take 3863441 and it gets even more complicated: theme Comics: Asterix but it is almost impossible to mention what is depicted in the title. If we empty person, this detailed information is gone. Arco, do you stay with physical persons (then I empty everything) or can cartoon characters also be used (but then nicely cleaned up)?
