Hello all!
Here I have a 2 Francs 1901 semeuse that I bought in a lot with other 2 francs. Unlike the other 2 francs that are real, this one only weighs 7.8 grams instead of 10 grams. The coin has little value so they counterfeit such pieces I wonder? And given the layer of dirt hanging on it.. Could this be an essai/test stroke?
Thank you for your opinion!

Hello Jmkempeneers !
The only proof of this coin known to me dates from 1898 and also weighs 10 grams, so it must be a forgery. Such a silver coin is now not worth much anymore, but 2 French Francs were still considerable sums of money in 1901. According to my inflation calculations over the years, the value then would have been comparable to a sloppy 75 euros now. So I think it would be a contemporary forgery, someone who wanted to make some cheap money to scam people at the time. In itself more interesting than a modern forgery, but for its silver content you will not be able to sell it in any case ;)
Hopefully this helps you further!
