As a simple (somewhat older) music lover, in view of the above discussion, I am now quitting.

I myself hope to be able to make a global distinction between Jazz, Folk, Blues, Soul, Classical, Reggea and a few other genres.

Even now I find it difficult to make choices, even with a limited number of genres, for example:

Chuck Berry made nice Rock and Roll music in my opinion. Many artists, including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Rod Steward, have recorded his music. Still, I wouldn't always choose Rock and Roll as a genre.

Bob Dylan made, again in my opinion, especially in the beginning, nice Folkmusic. His songs have also been recorded by a large number of artists, including The Byrds, Willy DeVille and Jimi Hendrix. Again, I would not choose Folk in all cases

Now that the number of genres continues to grow and more detailed choices have to be made, I will probably no longer be able to make choices.

Still, I also want to import the rest of my music collection, first the rest of my CDs and then the gramophone records.

I am then faced with the choice, regarding the genre: gamble or not fill in. I will choose the latter in the hope that others will fill in the genre.

I also agree with Koning's response, although I am sorry to leave the field empty.
For example, I see albums by Eric Clapton that really fall under pop / rock and really not under blues? who knows? may say so.

deblouw's comment regarding Dutch and cabaret
I can agree and indeed split. but in how much? and how
tormentor, folk singer, protest, etc
and cabaret, there will also be x number of movements

Fully agree with Koning.

The music lover who is not so well known in all subgenres cannot be expected to distinguish the genres that are sometimes close to each other.

And not filling in the genre shouldn't be a problem either: Those who do know can complete it themselves. (Let's build the best collector's catalog _together_)

I think it should work in such a way that everyone can make a choice from the main genres. So there should not be too many and all very recognizable.

Specialists can then indulge themselves in filling in the precise subgenres.

I agree too. Main genre must be global, sub genre specifies. Hardcore as it is now in the genre list can be removed in my view. Once subgenres can be added, further specification can be made.
Emo, metalcore, etc. can be punk or the last metal, actually more depending on what is usual. All hardcore variants that DeBlouw writes about can also be punk.
DeBlouw, can you agree with this when subgenres allow further specification?

Sounds like a great approach.

Yet there are also Clapton albums recorded as blues, for example: Derek and the Domino’s Layla, Bluesbreakers and Riding with the King.

Well, I just don't think "punk" is a good main genre, because bands that make hardcore just can't be called punk. Perhaps you should rather think of a main genre rock & amp; alternative like bol.com has:

By the way, I wonder if we should work with main genres. you can just classify a band according to the genre that suits you best? if you're unsure of the exact subgenre, simply classify the album in a more general genre, such as pop or rock. the real enthusiast will assign the album to the correct subgenre.

Is it not possible to put all genres on 1 level, but to put the 10 “biggest” genres at the top of the selection table? if you want to keep it simple just choose from that, otherwise look for the correct term in the rest of the list.

See for example http://www.cdwow.nl/music , there are the most important genres listed and if you continue you will see all the genres.

I don't want to let the discussion go too far in depth, but let's do it anyway.
Take the founder DOA as the basis for hardcore. Is that punk or hardcore (punk-rock) for you?
The rest has evolved, but remains hardcore with punk as a basis. Oi! is not punk either, but also belongs to this genre and emo is a mixture of hardcore and pop.

For me, rock 'n roll includes rockabilly, rock' n roll, doo wop, neo rockabilly, psychobilly. The instruments and the sound, tempo and lyrics differ. A layman is more likely to label psycho as punk or noise than to link it with rock 'n roll.

On BOL under “punk” I will find the Dropkick's, Blondie, Green Day, but also Social Distortion and under “alternative” Bruce Springsteen, Van Dik Hout and REM . One thing is certain, hardcore really does not belong to this last group.

By working with main genres you give direction to the style. You can then specify this with subgenres.
By limiting the number of genres, you actually ensure that most people can assign a correct genre. The rest has already been indicated before.

True, but Bol also places hardcore under punk.

Here you can see that they mix genres and subgenres. For example, rock 'n' roll is a genre, rockabilly a subgenre to name just one example.

Rene, how are we going to deal with this now? Hardcore is in any case already filled, but with the computerized version.

Yes indeed because I have put on a lot of computerized hardcore myself, but then under dance, techno and house. It's confusing now. There are now also Thunderdome articles under the hardcore section.

I just saw that Indie is a new genre in CW.
The disadvantage of this is that Indie is not a genre, but a way of life. Do It Yourself, not major record labels, is the basis for this movement. Hardcore, punk, no wave, new wave and many other genres and sub-genres are largely based on DIY and the Indie philosophy.

It would be best if someone could make a move for the main genres with an initial interpretation of the subgenres. Then I make sure that both genre fields are there and we can continue working from there.

Rockabilly is a sub-genre within R & amp; R, just like doo-wop, neo-rockabilly and psychobilly.
Sub-genres are still being added.

When entering the jazz CD “Anatomy of a Murder” I notice that in this case you can only choose the genre “jazz”, although it should just as well end up under the heading “Film music”.
Film music is not a genre of music, but it does include all genres of music written and performed for film.
Somehow this should be specifically mentioned.
How can this be remedied?

The soundtrack of a movie is the sequence and blending of both the spoken and the music.
Does not seem like the right solution to me.

@ tapir
I thought that if music from a film is released, it will take place under the heading of soundtrack (film music), and sometimes there may also be a piece of spoken text in it.
but as a rule this is the music that can be heard in the movie.
seems like a correct addition to the item.

Soundtrack translated into Dutch still means soundtrack.
So all sounds that can be heard: spoken language, music, background sounds, special effect sounds, commentary, etc.

Film music is a sound from a film and does it belong under a soundtrack? Or am I wrong?

Regarding Rene's question, we can use existing structures on other sites, the advantage is that this has already been thought through and that we do not have to reinvent the wheel. Of course we can also come up with something ourselves, but that will take time and probably also the necessary material for discussion.

Still, the general slogan for film music (the music of the film of the same name) is generally satisfying Sountrack
