vertigoIk heb veel festivals bezocht en bij elk bezoek stijgt het aantal bands dat je live hebt gezien met zo'n 10 tot 15 ;-) Teller staat op honderden. Sinds covid maar enkele artiesten live gezien, maar ik pak dat toch weer op. Alleen stadions en grote galmbakken sla ik over. Maar 7 september op het kleine zoldertje boven de kroeg ('t Rozenknopje) ben ik er weer bij als Doug MacLeod zijn kunsten vertoont ;-)
vertigoI've visited many festivals and with every visit the number of bands you've seen live increases by about 10 to 15 ;-) Counter is in the hundreds. Only seen a few artists live since covid, but I'll pick that up again anyway. I only skip stadiums and large reverb boxes. But September 7th in the little attic above the pub ('t Rozenknopje) I'll be there again when Doug MacLeod shows his skills ;-)

Stones gezien in 1966 in de (oude) Brabanthallen in Den Bosch en Simon & Garfunkel in de kuip in 1982 Meer niet....
Veel blues met oa Jeff Beck, BB King, Ray Charles, Robert Cray, Johnny Winter, Buddy Guy, Peter Green, Ten Years After, Canned Heat, Gary Moore, Walter Trout. De rij is eindeloos.
Doug MacLeod speelt akoestische blues, schrijft alles zelf en is al diverse malen gekozen tot Akoestiscg bluesartiest van het jaar en ook zijn CD's vallen bijna altijd in de prijzen. Hij zingt over de dingen die hij meemaakt zoals Rosa Lee of die hem opvallen The entitled Few. Zijn live-shows zijn bijna altijd intiem en nooit hetzelfde. Veel verhalen tussendoor.

Doug MacLeod plays acoustic blues, writes everything himself and has been chosen several times as Acoustic blues artist of the year and his CDs almost always win prizes. He sings about the things he experiences like Rosa Lee or that stand out to him The entitled Few . His live shows are almost always intimate and never the same. Lots of stories in between.

vertigoYep B&B Beatles en Blues. Screamin' Jay heb ik twee keer gezien. De eerste keer op het eerste en enige Lichtstad Blues Festival in Eindhoven beginjaren 90 in een enorme lange tent op een zaterdagavond. Er waren meer mensen achter de bar dan publiek. Het publiek dat er was paste op 1 rij voor het podium. Maar dat maakt Jay niks uit. Voor 10 man of 10.000 hij speelde gewoon zijn set. Om 11 uur moest hij stoppen van de organisatie wegens geluidoverlast, maar hij speelde gewoon door. Een half uur later trok de organisatie de stekker eruit.... De tweede keer was in 1993 op het Moulin Blues Festival in Ospel. Ook daar was het een prachtige show met nepslangen, kippenpootjes en een nepbotje door zijn neus. Geweldige artiest!
vertigoYep B&B Beatles and Blues. I've seen Screamin' Jay twice. The first time at the first and only Lichtstad Blues Festival in Eindhoven in the early 90s in a huge long tent on a Saturday night. There were more people behind the bar than audience. The audience that was there fit in 1 row in front of the stage. But Jay doesn't care. For 10 men or 10,000 he just played his set. At 11 o'clock he had to stop because of noise pollution, but he continued to play. Half an hour later, the organization pulled the plug.... The second time was in 1993 at the Moulin Blues Festival in Ospel. There too it was a wonderful show with fake snakes, chicken legs and a fake bone through his nose. Great artist!

Helaas voor mij het minst mooie nummer van The Cure, te commercieel, te vrolijk. In de begindagen van The Cure zoals op de albums Seventeen seconds en Faith vond ik The Cure op zijn best. Ik hield toen en (nog steeds) van de donkere Wave, o.a. Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim, Bauhaus, Joy Divison, The Cranes en onze Nederlandse band Clan of Xymox maar ook later HIM. En dat Dark wave nog steeds leeft dat bewijst de relatief nieuwe band She past away ook prachtig met invloeden van The Cure en Joy Division.

Unfortunately for me the least beautiful song by The Cure, too commercial, too cheerful. In the early days of The Cure, like on the albums Seventeen seconds and Faith, I thought The Cure was at his best. I loved then and (still) the dark Wave, including Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim, Bauhaus, Joy Divison, The Cranes and our Dutch band Clan of Xymox, but also later HIM. And that Dark wave is still alive is proven by the relatively new band She past away, with influences from The Cure and Joy Division.

metalfiguresIn de jaren 80 en 90 draaide ik veel Joy Division, Siouxsie, Dead Can Dance en Cocteau Twins, maar dat weerhield mij niet om bijvoorbeeld ook naar Frank Sinatra en Chic te luisteren. Ik ben het wel met je eens dat 'Friday I'm in Love' geen muzikaal hoogtepunt is. Het klinkt een beetje te normaal, bijna als doorsnee Britpop. Je verwacht van The Cure toch wat meer spanning of wat meer gekte.
Ik vermoed dat dit nummer vooral populair is in Groot-Brittannië. De tekst 'Friday I'm in Love' is natuurlijk fijn om in de pub/club mee te blèren als je dronken bent.

Volgens mij werd hij in de jaren 80 en 90 herontdekt o.a. door de verzamelalbums Frenzy (1982) en Cow Fingers And Mosquito Pie (1991). Ik zag hem in 1989 in de Statenhal tijdens North Sea. Was ook niet echt heel druk, maar er waren toch wel een paar honderd mensen.

metalfiguresIn the 80s and 90s I played a lot of Joy Division, Siouxsie, Dead Can Dance and Cocteau Twins, but that didn't stop me from listening to Frank Sinatra and Chic, for example. I agree with you that 'Friday I'm in Love' is not a musical highlight. It sounds a bit too normal, almost like your average Britpop. You expect a bit more tension or a bit more craziness from The Cure.
I suspect this song is especially popular in Britain. The text 'Friday I'm in Love' is of course nice to shout along in the pub/club when you're drunk.

I think he was rediscovered in the 80s and 90s by the compilation albums Frenzy (1982) and Cow Fingers And Mosquito Pie (1991) . I saw him in 1989 in the Statenhal during North Sea. Wasn't really busy, but there were still a few hundred people.
